Meanings

The opposite of give (We take sth from/out of/off a place, and from a person.)

  (e.g.)They took everything away from me

The opposite of put

  (e.g.)He took a ring out of his pocket and put it on her finger.

The opposite of bring (We can use take for movements away from the speaker)

  (e.g.)Can you take me to the station tomorrow morning?

ACCEPT  to accept or choose sth that is offered, suggested, or given to you

  (e.g.) If you take my advice, you’ll see a doctor.

TIME etc. to say how much TIME/MONEY/EFFORT/COURAGE etc. we need to do sth

  (e.g.)Organizing a successful party takes a lot of energy.

ACTION  take a step/walk/look/bath/wash/bite/drink/rest etc.

  (e.g.)Sara took a deep breath.

HAVE FEELING/OPINION----take delight/pleasure/pride/interest etc. in sth

  (e.g.)At first, he took no interest in the baby.

SUBTRACT

  (e.g.)’Take four from nine and what do you get?’ ‘Five’.

SUITABLE to be the correct or suitable size, type etc. for a particular person or thing

  (e.g.)What size shoe do you take?

Phrasal Verbs

take after sb     to look like or behave like an older member of your family

                        (e.g.) Jack doesn’t take after his father at all.

take sth up        to start to do a new activity, especially for pleasure

                       (e.g.) I didn’t know you’d taken up cookery!

take up space/time        to fill a particular amount of space or time

                                    (e.g.) The equipment is expensive and takes up a lot of space.

take sb in          (often passive) to make sb believe sth that is not true

                       (e.g.) She took me in completely with her story.

take sb’s breath away   to be very beautiful, exciting or surprising

                                    (e.g.) My first view of the island from the air took my breath away.
